1. General information
The subject of Periodontics should enable the student to diagnose and treat periodontal diseases, as well as to promote the development of preventive attitudes of such diseases.
Therefore, it is intended that students achieve the following:
- Establish a correct diagnosis of periodontal disease.
- Establish a general prognosis of the case and individual prognosis for each of the teeth present in the mouth.
- Plan and perform the most appropriate periodontal treatment for each patient, as well as periodontal maintenance.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda ( 2030 Agenda (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/),:
- Goal 3: Health and Wellness.
2. Learning results
1) Identify the symptoms reported by the patient as well as the signs (by means of clinical examination and complementary tests), typical of periodontal pathology and peri-implant tissues.
2) Perform a correct diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan of the patient with a level similar to the one worked in the class.
3) Perform the basic phase of periodontal treatment as well as the maintenance phase at a basic level.
4) Know how to adequately assess the patient's conditions (e.g. age, socio-cultural level, medical risks...) in relation to the proposed treatment in order to meet the patient's expectations, always assessing the risks and benefits of the therapeutic act.

UNIT 1. ANATOMY OF THE PERIODONTIUM.
UNIT 2. PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY OF THE PERIODONTIUM.
UNIT 3. ETIOLOGY AND PATHOGENESIS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASES.
UNIT 4. PERIODONTAL MICROBIOLOGY.
UNIT 5. SYSTEMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE. UNIT 6. CLASSIFICATION OF PERIODONTAL DISEASES.
UNIT 7. GINGIVITIS.
UNIT 8. NECROTIZING PERIODONTAL DISEASES.
UNIT 9. PERIODONTITIS.
UNIT 10. DIAGNOSIS, PROGNOSIS AND PERIODONTAL TREATMENT PLAN.
UNIT 11. BASIC PERIODONTAL THERAPY.
TOPIC 12. PERIODONTAL MAINTENANCE THERAPY.
4. Academic activities
- Lectures by the teaching staff.
- Cooperative group work.
- Explanatory sessions by the students.
- Preclinical laboratory and clinical practices.
5. Assessment system
- Objective knowledge test (60% of the final grade). It is a final exam with multiple choice questions (40 in total with five options with only one correct answer and 4 reserve questions). To pass the test a minimum of 28 questions must be answered correctly. Wrong answers do not subtract points, blank answers neither add nor subtract points.
- Completion of the work and its defence (20% of the final grade): the teacher will randomly assign a topic for the completion of the work, which will have to be defended. The date of delivery and defence of the same will be indicated by the faculty at the beginning of the term.
- Performance of practical exercises and evaluation of the technical skills developed in the preclinical practices (20% of the final grade)
The theoretical and practical parts of the subject must be passed separately in order to pass the subject.
